প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার (সিইসি) এ এম এম নাসির উদ্দিন উল্লেখ করেছেন যে, যদি সরকার ও আদালত আওয়ামী লীগকে নিষিদ্ধ না করে, তবে তাদের নির্বাচনে অংশগ্রহণে কোনো বাধা নেই। বর্তমানে নির্বাচন কমিশন সম্পূর্ণ স্বাধীনভাবে কাজ করছে এবং কোনো রাজনৈতিক বা আন্তর্জাতিক চাপের সম্মুখীন হচ্ছে না।

সোমবার (৩০ ডিসেম্বর) সকালে চট্টগ্রাম সার্কিট হাউজে ভোটার তালিকা হালনাগাদ ও ত্রয়োদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন উপলক্ষে নির্বাচন কর্মকর্তাদের সঙ্গে মতবিনিময়কালে তিনি এই মন্তব্য করেন।

সিইসি আরও বলেন, আমরা এখন বিবেকের চাপ অনুভব করছি। এই দেশে সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচন আয়োজন সম্ভব, আবার খারাপ নির্বাচনও হতে পারে। কমিশন সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচন নিশ্চিত করতে সব ধরনের পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করবে। আগামী ৬ মাসের মধ্যে ভোটার তালিকা হালনাগাদ করা হবে এবং এইবার আগের মতো ভোট হবে না। ৫ আগস্টের পর ভোটের বিষয়ে জাতীয় ঐক্য গড়ে উঠেছে। ৯১ ও ৯৬ সালের মতো নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হবে।

বিগত নির্বাচন কমিশনকে শাস্তির আওতায় আনার বিষয়ে কোনো পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে কিনা জানতে চাইলে তিনি বলেন, এটি নির্বাচন সংস্কার কমিশনের বিষয়। আমরা এখনও তাদের সুপারিশনামা গ্রহণ করিনি। তবে আমাদের কমিশনের পক্ষ থেকে এ ধরনের কোনো চিন্তা করা হচ্ছে না এবং কোনো সিদ্ধান্তও নেওয়া হয়নি।

এ সময় আঞ্চলিক নির্বাচন কর্মকর্তা মো. ইউনুছ আলী, জেলা নির্বাচন কর্মকর্তা এনামুল হক এবং উপজেলা নির্বাচন কর্মকর্তাগণ উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

The commission will take all kinds of steps to ensure fair elections. The voter list will be updated within the next 6 months and this time there will be no voting like before. National unity has been established regarding the elections after August 5. Elections will be held like in 1991 and 1996.

When asked if there is any plan to bring the previous Election Commission under punishment, he said, it is a matter for the Election Reform Commission. We have not yet accepted their recommendation. However, no such thoughts are being entertained by our commission and no decision has been taken.
