"The Brave Sacrifice of Nangeli: A Stand Against Injustice in 19th
Century Kerala"
"How One Woman's Defiance
Against Unjust Taxation Sparked a Movement for Women's Rights"
215 years ago, the
king of present-day Kerala, India, was Travancore. During his reign, men had to
pay a tax if they wanted to keep a mustache, while women were taxed for their
breasts. Locally, this was called "Mulakkaram."
The law at the time
stated that apart from Brahmins, no Hindu woman was allowed to cover her
breasts. Women were required to keep their breasts uncovered and exposed. If
they wanted to cover them, they had to pay a breast tax. The amount of this tax
depended on the size of the breasts; the larger the breasts, the higher the
tax. A significant portion of this breast tax went to the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, which, according to
the Guinness Book of Records, is the richest temple in the world.
During that time, a
35-year-old woman of dark complexion, who was exceptionally beautiful, often
had to go out for work. However, she always covered her breasts. One day, she
caught the attention of the tax collectors. They demanded that she pay the
breast tax. She refused, saying, "Who are you to decide whether I cover or
uncover my breasts? I will not pay the tax."
The tax collectors
came to her house every day, pressing her to pay the tax. The burden of the tax
increased over time.
Eventually, she
agreed to pay the tax. She asked the tax collectors to wait outside, closed the
door, went inside her house, and cut off her breasts with a sharp instrument.
Then she wrapped her breasts in a banana leaf and handed them to the tax
collector as tax. She said, "I will not keep the thing for which I have to
pay extra tax."
The tax collector
and all the neighbors were stunned by this incident.
Afterwards, she
bled excessively and died. This incident spread throughout India. A few days
later, King Travancore was compelled to abolish the breast tax and all other
illegal taxes. Unwittingly, this woman planted the seeds of the cloth riots
that erupted in India in 1859. This self-sacrificing woman’s name was Nangeli.
Through her sacrifice, she established the rights of women in Kerala. She could have complied with the breast tax like all other women and had the means to pay it. But some people are born with fire in their hearts. When injustice comes their way, it cannot find a place in their hearts; it is consumed by the fire in their chest. That is why Nangeli taught women to protest against injustice, giving up her own happiness, peace, and desires.
But this story does
not end here. As Nangeli’s body was still burning on
the funeral pyre, suddenly a man rushed and jumped onto the pyre. That man was Nangeli's husband. This is the first
and last recorded instance in Indian history of a man choosing to die alongside
his wife.
